Translation Quality Assessment(TQA)is an integral part of translation studies. Many theories had been put forward.However.most of them were limited to impressionistic or experience-based sununative statements without systematic theoretical reasoning and methodological approaches, and subjectivity largely undermines the representativeness of the research data or findings.Besides, these theories lacked logical steps to guide the assessors to follow. These may lead to an incomplete assessment result. In 1977,German scholar Juliane House proposed the first TQA model based on systematic-linguistics,discourse analysis, pragmatics, and stylistics. She also put forward the term of overt translation and covert translation to inform and guide a more detailed review of various kinds of translation found in real life. This study applies House's 2015 TQA model to assessing the top 20 Chinese translations of the English article "A Reverend Judge",which is the article of the "Transyes Cup English Translation Competition for Graduate Students in Beijing" This thesis intends to,on the one hand, evaluate the quality of the 20 translations, and on the other hand, study the strengths and limitations of the model so that future studies can follow a more objective and balanced approach. This study strictly follows the operation steps of House's TQA model. This study is mainly a qualitative one,in which 20 translations are studied from the perspective of register, genre, and text function.Meanwhile, this study also provides statistics to make the assessment more objective. The study shows that most candidates convey the meaning of the ST.However, the original style has failed to be maintained in most of these translations.Besides, this study has also confirmed that House's TQA model can still be improved in being more general to cover all types of ST,being more effective to be applied, and reducing the subjectivity of assessors, which still require more case studies for further verification.
