| Based on the author’s liaison interpreting tasks in the field of agriculture,this practice report discusses effective pre-task preparation for liaison interpreting by applying Register Theory.For liaison interpreting which involves very specialized domain knowledge,sufficient pre-task preparation is of great importance.In the author’s case,insufficient pre-task preparation caused failures in her first interpreting task,namely,inaccurate expression of terms,information misinterpretation,meaning loss,impolite expression,pet phrases and broken sentences.The author employed Register Theory to analyze these failures and found that failures which caused by insufficient pre-task preparation further resulted in non-equivalence of field,tenor and mode between the source and target language.Register could help interpreters analyze a task from the perspective of field,tenor and mood before the task so as to anticipate related information.Besides,through pre-task preparation under the guidance of Register Theory,the interpreter would pay attention to register equivalence even at the pre-task stage,which helps to achieve equivalence of field,tenor and mode so as to improve interpreting performance on spot.To have a scientific pre-task preparation for liaison interpreting and further achieve equivalence of field,tenor and mode,the author proposed five aspects of pre-task preparation based on Register Theory,namely,glossary preparation,background information preparation,discourse structure knowledge preparation,general knowledge about speakers and audience preparation,as well as agenda preparation.She applied these five aspects into the pre-task preparation of the second task,and found that the performance of the second task was better than that of the first task.Through self-evaluation and feedback,the proposed preparation was proved to be effective and feasible. |
