| Jointly organized by the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Jiangsu Federation of Industry & Commerce(Jiangsu General Chamber of Commerce),the 6th Victoria Jiangsu Business Placement(VJBP)Program was held from May 10 th,2019 to May 17 th,2019.In the program, the reporter served as the liaison interpreter in business contacts, visits, and negotiations as well as scenic spot sightseeing for Ms.Danielle Neil,Marketing,Sales & Functions Executive of The Sovereign Hill Museum Association. In the process of interpreting, the reporter encountered both language and non-language obstacles. The former includes two aspects: one is the unfamiliarity with terminology in cultural relics and craftsmanship;the other is information omission in long sentences and paragraphs interpreting. The latter is the lack of background knowledge of Chinese traditional culture and ability to cope with psychological pressure. The reporter proposes corresponding solutions, based on the analysis of the transcripts of this program and previous research and experience,to solve these problems. In terms of language obstacles, the reporter should be fully prepared for interpretation, grasp as much terminology as one could and make more efforts on short-term memory training.Concerning non-language obstacles, the reporter should expand the knowledge of Chinese traditional culture, promote the awareness of intercultural communication and improve the ability to work under pressure by constant practice. It is hoped that this report will provide interpreters especially those who engage in similar programs or programs including business, cultural and people-to-people exchanges with practical reference and assistance. |
