Nowadays,the importance of Chinese culture in Intercultural Communication has been increasingly emphasized.According to the English Key Competences,Chinese culture has also been paid more attention in English teaching.At present,the previous researches on the ability to express Chinese culture in English mainly focus on the problem of "Chinese cultural aphasia" by assessing the average score of the test.Under this background,the current situation of students' ability to express Chinese culture in English and whether they can reach the requirements for Chinese culture in English Key Competences still need to be further explored.Therefore,based on the requirement of English Key Competences and relevant theoretical and empirical researches,this study defines the ability to express Chinese culture in English from the following levels: perceptual attention,memorization,generalization and introduction,description and analysis.The participants of this study are 96 senior high school students and 9 experienced English teachers in Xi'an Qujiang No.1 High School.Through questionnaires,tests,and interviews,this research aims to explore the following questions: firstly,what is the current situation of senior high school students' ability to express Chinese culture in English? Secondly,what are the main factors affecting senior high school students' ability to express Chinese culture in English?The results show that students' ability to express Chinese culture in English mainly stays in the level of perceptual attention and memorization,while their performances of generalization and introduction,description and analysis are poor.The requirements for Chinese culture in English Key Competences are not reached.Moreover,the main factors affecting senior high school students' ability to express Chinese culture in English are the old-fashioned and inflexible teaching methods and the insufficient input of Chinese culture in the process of teaching and learning.Students' learning methods are few.Therefore,in terms of the findings of the study,relevant suggestions are put forward to promote students' ability to express Chinese culture in English.
