On The Dissemination And Reception Of Liu Zhenyun's Works In The English World

In Recent years,Liu Zhenyun,a distinguished novelist in contemporary China,has become one of key authors that Howard Goldblatt,the chief translator of modern and contemporary Chinese literature,would like to introduce into the English world and has received unanimous appraisal from sinologists for the storytelling,philosophy and literariness embodied in his works.The film adaptation based on I Did Not Kill My Husband: A Novel was awarded with countless domestic and international prizes,which attracted much attention from both home and abroad.However,compared with comprehensive and systematic studies on Liu's works,few studies were found on the renditions of his works,which runs counter to the going-out trend of his works.Therefore,translation studies on the dissemination and reception of English renditions of his works are of great academic value and will provide important experiences and lessons for Chinese literature going global.Based on the theories of Medio-Translatology and Manipulation,this thesis adopts quantitative,descriptive and explanatory research methods and attempts to give objective description on the status quo of dissemination and reception of Liu Zhenyun's translated works in the English world and analyze the factors behind.Based on substantial research,data collection and analyses,this thesis intends to answer the following questions: How is the status quo of the dissemination and reception of Liu Zhenyun's works in the English world? What factors contribute to the present situation? What implications can we learn from the translation and dissemination of Liu Zhenyun's works and hence to expedite Chinese literature“going global”?This thesis consists of five chapters.Chapter One is introduction,which states research background,significance of the thesis,research methodology and objective,theoretical framework and thesis structure.Chapter Two reviews domestic translation studies on the English renditions of Liu Zhenyun as well as overseas studies on his works and illustrates the great research value of studying dissemination and reception of Liu's translated works.Chapter Three describes the status quo of dissemination and reception of Liu Zhenyun's translated works in the English-speaking countries from the perspectives of library holdings,publication and sales,reviews from mainstream media as well as ratings and reviews from general readers.Chapter Four probes intothe factors that constitute the situation of dissemination and reception under the theories of Medio-Translatology and Manipulation.Chapter Five concludes major findings of this thesis,points out the inadequacy of this thesis and demonstrates prospects for further study.
