Malaysia has a complete Chinese education system.However,in the face of complex ethnic relations,the Malaysian Chinese society has long focused on the government's pressure to suppress Chinese mother tongue education and has no time to take care of the promotion of Chinese as a second language.Therefore,the government is obviously not motivated to promote the Chinese language,and cannot take advantage of the Chinese society.With the development of the "Belt and Road" initiative and the development of national strategic needs,the Malaysian government gradually realized the importance of learning Chinese and began to adopt the method of "input communication" to meet the needs of Malaysians to learn Chinese.The Confucius Institute emerged as the main force for the international promotion of Chinese in Malaysia.The Confucius Institute University of Malaya is the first Confucius Institute in Malaysia.It has been established for a long time and its operating system has matured.In 2019,it was the tenth anniversary of the establishment of the Confucius Institute University of Malaya.In the past ten years,the Confucius Institute has developed steadily and achieved remarkable results.It has actively played a role as a bridge for cultural exchanges between China and Malaysia.However,the future development is also facing many new challenges.This paper takes the Confucius Institute University of Malaya as an example.By sorting out the relevant materials of Chinese language promotion work since the establishment of Confucius Institute,investigating the Chinese language promotion situation of the headquarters and three representative teaching points,analyzing the development status and problems of the Chinese language promotion in Confucius Institutes in Malaysia.Finally,suggest some Chinese language promotion methods that are more in line with Malaysia's national conditions.The thesis is divided into four parts.The first part is the introduction,which mainly clarifies the background of the topic and the significance of the topic,and summarizes the relevant research literature.The second part provides an overview of the promotion of Chinese in Malaysia,including the situation of Chinese education in Malaysia and the development of the Confucius Institute.The scope of this paper is the promotion of Chinese as a second language at the Confucius Institute University of Malaya.Therefore,the second part focuses on the development of Chinese teaching and cultural promotion at the Confucius Institute University of Malaya.The third part first introduces the design and implementation of the questionnaire survey and interview survey,and then analyzes the current situation of Chinese language promotion at the headquarters and teaching points of the University according to the survey results,including learners,language teaching,teaching materials,teachers and culture promotion.In the fourth part,through the analysis of the status,the problems of the current Chinese language promotion at the Confucius Institute Headquarters and teaching points are summarized,and a reference response strategy is proposed based on the actual situation in Malaysia.The survey shows that the Confucius Institute University of Malaya still has a lot of room for development in terms of curriculum setting,teacher reserve,cultural promotion,and brand awareness.The problems in teaching sites are the separation of Chinese teaching from the Confucius Institute Headquarters,lack of teaching materials,and limited cultural promotion activities.The author put forward specific solutions and optimization suggestions in this regard,hoping to have a positive impact on the future development of the Confucius Institute University of Malaya,and have reference significance for the development of other Confucius Institutes in Malaysia.At the same time,it also has certain reference value for the development of Confucius Institutes in other countries with similar background in Southeast Asia.
