Public sign is a kind of special application which is common and widely used in social life.It plays an important role in modern social life. However, the translation of C-E public signs has always been criticized by experts in domestic cities. There are a lot of mistakes in Chinese-English translation of public signs, and the quality of translation is often unsatisfactory. The mistranslations brought a lot of inconvenience to the public and target readers, and seriously hindered the economic and cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries. Therefore, the study of the translation of public signs is necessary. This thesis attempts to study the Chinese-English translation of public signs from the perspective of Eco-translatology.According to the previous studies, scholars have explored the research on the translation of public signs generally from the perspectives of functional translation theory, skopos theory, relevance theory, and intercultural communication. However, the research from the perspective of Eco-translatology on this field is limited at home.As a native theory,Eco-translatology provides a new perspective and guidance for the translation of public signs. This theory emphasizes that translation is the translator's adaptive selection and selective adaptation. In the process of translation, the translator needs to give full play to subjective initiative, comprehensively consider the transformation of linguistic dimension, cultural dimension and communicative dimension between the original text and target text to ensure to get the high degree of holistic adaptation and selection. This thesis makes use of qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis, and a small self-built corpus was established in order to analyze the mistranslations of C-E public signs. The following three problems are discussed: the types of English translation errors of public signs, how to adapts to the ecological translation environment, and the specific strategies of translation of public signs. It is found that there are three main problems in the C-E translation of the public signs:mistranslations at linguistic level(spelling mistakes, grammar mistakes, mechanical equivalence and improper diction),mistranslations at cultural level(cross-cultural misunderstandings, unconventional expressions and cultural vacancies)and mistranslations at pragmatic level(Chinglish, improper tone and using pinyin to replace the English). The the first type of mistranslations account for the biggest proportion. The translator needs to have the professional English knowledge and translation skills, understand the target reader's specific needs and the differences between Chinese and English. The aim is to better adapt tothe translational eco-environment and get the qualified translation.By using the three-dimensional transformation principle in the light of Eco-translatology,the author puts forward the corresponding suggested solutions through the selective adaptation of the translational eco-environment and the adaptive selection of the target text. Finally puts forward three translation strategies: borrowing translation, omission and creative translation.Through the case study of public signs, this study further shows that ecological translation theory can effectively guide the translation of public signs in Chinese and English, and provide some references for the translation of public signs.
