Biographical text is a literary form that involves both history and literature, which artistically presents the stories and characteristics of the figures. It is a combination of historic, authentic, scientific, literary and artistic features.Meanwhile,it bears social function, educational cognition and aesthetic function. In order to achieve the target of strengthening the communication and researches between China and the Western countries, translation plays a vital role.In the process of translation,it is necessary to convey the accurate information carried by the source text.Meanwhile, the style and aesthetic features should also be considered. Therefore, applying proper translation theories and strategies is an effective way to bridge the distance between the original author and target readers as well as expand the value of biography.According to Peter Newmark's translation theory, semantic translation applies to expressive text which focuses on the form of source text while communicative translation applies to informative text and vocative text that lays stress on express effects and is reader-oriented to minimize reading barriers when outputting the target text.Biography is a literary form that combines both the characteristics of expressive text and informative text.Semantic translation and communicative translation would provide guidance for the translation project. The translation report adopts Chapters eight to ten excerpted from the book Churchill and Orwell:the Fight for Freedom as source text.Through analysis and study, the translator conducts cases studies from the lexical level, syntactic level and textual level to analyze the practical application of semantic translation and communicative translation, including culture-loaded words and phrases, complex sentences, compound sentences and passive sentences as well as textual coherence and writing style. The translator adopts translation methods, including literal translation, paraphrase, splitting, adjusting sentence order, amplification and omission to achieve a balance that reserves the historic features while enhancing readabilities of the target text.Through the practice,it turns out that semantic translation and communicative translation can offer great guidance when translating biography.Semantic translation is preferred when the information and style need to be reserved;communicative translation can be applied when focus is on the readers' feeling and the readability of the target text. Therefore,an integration of both theories can not only keep the accurate information but also improve communication.
