E-C Translation Practice Report-Bidding Document For Procurement Of Construction Of Wastewater Treatment Plant At Dhobighat Guided By The Skopos Theory

With the in-depth development of economic globalization and the proposal of "One Belt And One Road",China’s economy has been booming and its influence in the world has been gradually strengthened.Since the policy of reform and opening up was put forward,many Chinese enterprises have gone abroad to participate in international trade competition.In recent years,the Chinese government has been giving active support to enterprises participating in international bidding,which not only promotes the further "going out" of Chinese enterprises,but also enhances the competitiveness of Chinese enterprises in the international market and helps to establish a good corporate image in the international market.English is a universal language;the author finds that the language used in international bidding documents is mostly English.The author chooses the Bidding Document for Procurement of Construction of Wastewater Treatment Plant at Dhobighat for translation task,because the author wants to improve the level of the Bidding documents translation.What’s more,the author hopes this can help the Chinese enterprises to better participate in international competitive bidding activities,and so that it is better for international bidding activities to make substantial response.This report of translation practice is guided by the Skopos Theory,and the Bidding Document for Procurement of Construction of Wastewater Treatment Plant at Dhobighat is the research object of translation practice.The author will analyze the language and text characteristics of this bidding document,and then the author will discuss and summarize some practical and proper translation strategies and methods.According to Skopos Theory,there are three major translation rules:Skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule,among which the Skopos rule is the most important one.Therefore,in the process of translation,the translator should adopt appropriate translation methods and strategies,so as to achieve the expected purpose of translation.After reading the source text carefully,the author finds that Bidding Document for Procurement of Construction of Wastewater Treatment Plant at Dhobighat belongs to an informational text.The purpose of this bidding document is to pass on the relevant information of bidding activities.The bidding document has its own features,such as,formal wording,strict torms,Iong sentences,and related terms of legal and commercial contract.According to the text type and language characteristics of the bidding document,the author,under the guidance of Skopos Theory,adopts corresponding translation strategies,such as literal translation,free translation,conversion and other methods,so that the translation can achieve the purpose of conveying important information to bidders.In the specific analysis of translation cases,the author analyzes the differences in expression and writing characteristics between English and Chinese from several aspects,such as modal verbs,formal terms,terminologies,passive sentences and declarative sentences,so as to better understand the text and language features of bidding document.This report of translation practice finds that the Skopos Theoly can be as a practical and proper theoretical guidance for the translation of bidding document Different from the traditional translation theory "equivalence principle",Skopos Theory breaks through the absolute equivalence between the source text and the target text.What’s more,Skopos Theory requires the translator should give priority to the expected function or purpose of translation,and take the most appropriate methods and strategies for translation.However,though the Skopos Theory emphasizes that the target text should pay attention to the expected purpose of translation,and it also pays attention to the readability and acceptability of the target text in the target language context.At the same time,the target text should be faithful to the source text.To conclude,the three basic rules of Skopos Theory provides a strong theoretical basis for translation evaluation criteria,which has strong operational feasibility and can promote the improvement of translation quality.
