| Translation and introduction of juvenile literature accelerate the exchanges between cultures of young people in different countries. This paper, based upon the translation practice of Out of the Blue explores and analyzes the translation of cultural elements.Translation of the novel involves much cultural shifts and interaction,so this paper, guided by the cultural school of translation studies, mainly discusses how to adopt appropriate correct translation strategy in order to successfully realize cultural interaction and communication. In this paper, homosexual episodes, religious terms, rhetoric devices and stylistic features of the original author are cited as examples to explore acculturation in the process of translation. This translation practice shows that as a cultural communicator, the translator needs to conform to mainstream ideology as well as cultural and poetical tradition of the target language so as to make the translation more acceptable to the target readers. This paper starts with an introduction to the author and the book, and then it introduces the cultural school in translation studies. As a leading figure in cultural studies and an initiator of the manipulation school,Andre Lefevere believes that manipulation in translation mainly results from three factors: ideology, sponsor and poetics. Therefore analyses of the translation cases are categorized in these three domains. This paper also includes the description of three stages of the translation process, including the pre-translation,the translation and the post-translation.Fully understand the original text and determine the translation style before translation;unify terminology in translation;repeatedly revised and polished in post-translation proofreading.Out of the Blue is a juvenile fantasy novel targeted to the readers aged between 9 to 14 years old.A large amount of cultural background knowledge in the original work needs to be correctly conveyed to the reader, including religious cultural background, custom culture, dialectal words and other elements. In this regard, the methods of addition, subtraction and annotation are adopted in the translation. The style of the book is very distinctive, and many of the stories take the form of dialogue, which is also a feature of young adult literature. Therefore, the translation should closely conform to the style of the original text, and only when the translation strategies of domestication or foreignization are adopted flexibly can the translation style be as equivalent as possible. In addition, the cultural school points out that both ideology and sponsor are important factors affecting translation. Therefore,in the translation, according to the requirements and regulations of the sponsor, the contents of the original text that do not conform to the ideology in the target culture are deleted. It can be seen from this translation practice, the original text must be acculturated to be accepted by the target language market. |
