A Report On The Translation Of Renewable Energy:A Primer For The Twenty-first Century(Chapter 8-9)

Since the establishment of the United Nations Environment Programme in 1972,the issue of environment and energy has gradually become a global hot topic.The international community calls on all countries to work together to shoulder the responsibility of reducing emissions and saving energy.As the largest developing country in the world,China has always taken the initiative to take the responsibility of emission reduction and energy conservation and vigorously develop clean energy.Renewable Energy: A Primer for the Twenty-First Century is a popular science book which discusses the current situation and development trend of renewable energy and electric vehicle industry from the perspective of economics.The translation of this text helps to popularize knowledge about renewable energy to the public,with the aim of enhancing the readers' understanding of new energy and promoting their environmental awareness.This translation report consists of four parts: translation task description,translation process description,translation cases analysis and translation practice summary.The first part,translation task description,introduces the source text,the author and the practical significance of translation.The second part describes the process of translation,from pre-translation preparation,the difficulties in translation,to post-translation revision.The third part,analysis of translation cases,analyzes the key sentences and difficulties in translation from three aspects separately: vocabulary,sentence and discourse,then summarizes corresponding translation methods.As to the difficult vocabularies,the methods of choosing the proper meaning of words,conversion of part of speech,words additions and omissions are used.On the level of sentence,translation methods including replacing passive voice with active voice,splitting and restructuring the long sentences,and substituting inanimate subject with animate subject are proposed through the discussion of long or complex sentences.With the use of the above methods,sentences in the translated text can be semantically accurate and logically fluent.From the perspective of discourse,two translation methods can be used to improve the coherence of the translated text: adding logical conjunctions and clarifying substitutions.After analyzing the translation cases and generalizing the translation methods,the present author summarizes some experience and insights gained from this translation practice.The first step to a successful translation is to accurately understand the original text with the help of parallel texts and related materials in advance.As to the translation of technical terms,the principle of consistency should be observed,meanwhile,the translation should be adjusted accordingly in different contexts.Besides,translators should choose appropriate translation methods according to specific texts instead of applying fixed translation rules.Finally,in addition to improving language ability,translators should accumulate knowledge of various fields and industries as much as possible to lay a solid foundation for the translation of various texts.
