A Report On The Translation Of Black's Law Dictionary(J-M)

The source material of this translation practice is selected from some entries of J-M in Black's Law Dictionary edited by Bryan A.Garner.As one of the most authoritative legal dictionaries in the United States and even in the world,Black's Law Dictionary covers the contents of legal history,civil law,contract law,tort law,property law,inheritance law,marriage law,business law,company law,criminal law,procedural law and so on.The dictionary contains much knowledge on law and is abundant with legal terms,which are helpful to enhance the capability of legal translation and legal terminology translation.There are many conflicts between Chinese and western legal culture during the translation which requires a good understanding of the differences between different legal cultures,so the legal culture literacy will be promoted from this.This translation report consists of four parts: task description,process description,case analysis and summary.In the third part,there are details of the difficulties in translation analyzing from language and culture.At the language level,the author mainly analyzes translation of vocabularies and sentences,among which the translation of Latin words,French words,legal terms,common words,comtmon words with special legal meaning and slang are firstly analyzed in vocabulary translation.Secondly,the author analyzes the translation of attributive clause and adverbial clause.Lastly,the translation of the text involving case law and the jury system are analyzed from the culture aspect.With the translation strategy of domestication and foreignization applied,the translation methods of literal translation and explanatory translation are adopted for different contents.
