As a key part of interpretation, interpreters have long been defined as"microphone"between two languages, treated as invisible and/or neglectable. However, with the in-depth development of interpreting activities, more interpreters and researchers have found that under some circumstances, especially in liaison interpreting,if interpreters choose to show their visibility consciousness and take part in the communication process apart from decoding and coding between two languages, they can help both sides to better conduct cross-cultural communication.Based on the interpreter's interpreting practice for on-site investigation into a papermaking factory in Jinan, this report discusses interpreter's visibility consciousness in liaison interpreting basing on a theory proposed by Chinese scholar Ren Wen,in which she introduced three manifestations of liaison interpreters' visibility consciousness:interpreters as gatekeepers,co-interlocutors and coordinators/mediators.The author believes that it is necessary for interpreters to properly display visibility consciousness in liaison interpreting. In this report, the author firstly details every stage of this interpreting practice, including clients,pre-task preparation, interpreting process, and problems encountered. Then, the author explores how she shows her visibility consciousness under the guidance of the three manifestations of visibility consciousness proposed by Ren Wen.Moreover, the author summarizes eight interpreting tactics based on three manifestations of visibility consciousness, which are reorganization, addition, omission, informing the speaker in advance, inquiry, replying to the speaker timely, creating a turn and interrupting/ignoring a turn. Finally, the author provides task feedback from clients and makes a self-reflection.The author hopes that this report can provide a reference for liaison interpreters to better display their visibility consciousness so as to deliver liaison interpreting services of higher quality to their clients.
