Interpreters’ Coping Tactics In Foreign Affairs Liaison-Escort Interpreting In The Perspective Of Interpreters’ Visibility Consciousness

The concept of interpreters’subjectivity has recently been raised by many scholars and experts since1970s. The interpreter’s invisibility is impossible according to those studies for many reasons. As one aspect of subjectivity consciousness, the interpreter’s VC plays an important role in interpreting process.Meanwhile, with the Chinese economic reform, entery to WTO, and the deepening global exchange and cooperation, the foreign affairs interpreting has become particularly important in China and how to achieve a successful foreign affairs interpreting has become very crucial nowadays.Therefore, this thesis intends to explore the coping tactics of the foreign affairs liaison-escort interpreting in the perspective of the interpreter’s VC on the basis of the author’s own experiences in the author’s graduate interpreting practice, to provide effective theoretical basis for the role of the interpreters, and to endow the foreign affairs liaison-escort interpreters with skills to be followed in the future interpreting activities.This thesis is composed of four chapters. In Chapter One, the author illustrates the concept, history, nature, standards and classification of the foreign affairs interpreting. Then the author focuses on liaison-escort interpreting and summarizes its five characteristics.In Chapter Two, the author classifies her own liaison-escort interpreting activities for three catalogues:media interpreting, business interpreting, and education interpreting. The author describes the content, background, time, and nature of every activity task.Chapter Three is about the introduction to visibility consciousness (VC). Through a brief introduction to the interpreter’s subjectivity consciousness, the author gives an overview of the interpreter’s VC including the definition, origin, and development of the interpreter’s VC, discusses the display of VC, the relationship between ethics and VC, and the effects of VC on interpreting quality. Thus the author provides an angle of view to give a fundamental basis for further studying tactics of the foreign affairs liaison-escort interpreting.In the last chapter, the author concludes some coping tactics in the perspective of the interpreter’s VC to guide the future foreign affairs liaison-escort interpreting. All the examples are based on the author’s own experiences. The purpose of this thesis is to help the interpreters to fulfill the interpreting task successfully with some coping tactics, thus achieving communication goals and guiding the interpreters to conduct the future foreign affairs liaison-escort interpreting activities.
