American fantasy novel expert George Raymond Richard Martin has been praised by the well-known American magazine "Time" as "Tolkien in the United States" and "Hemingway in the new century" for his excellent fantasy works, especially his A Song of Ice and Fire, which is known as "the first classic of serious contemporary fantasy".In addition to the excellent work itself,it has won praises from many critics for its relevant social history and cultural traditions. This article focuses on the secondary characters in A Song of Ice and Fire, particularly the identity of this group of characters. The introduction starts with a review of domestic and foreign research achievements, discussing the related concepts of literary history and literary theory such as fantasy literature, growth novels and identity. It also clarifies the connotation and extension of related theoretical terms, and determines the basic framework of subsequent research and theoretical context. There are three chapters in the main body of this article, taking Tyrion Lannister,Jon Snow and Sean Greyjoy as examples, based on three major parts of identity theory:self-identity,social identity, ethnic identity. In order to examine the specific path and realization process of the marginal to solve the identity problem from these three aspects. The first chapter focuses on the identification process of the pygmy Tyrion Lannister. This chapter mainly discusses the key factors that promoted his change during his growtfh from children to adults, and what changes do these nodes make causing him to eventually achieve self-identification.The second chapter mainly discusses the process of identification of illegitimate child Jon Snow. For illegitimate children like Jon,the biggest difficulty in growing up is to overcome public opinion bias and integrate into society. Therefore, this chapter will focus on whether he will eventually integrate into society. What turning events did he experience during his attempt to integrate into society, and how did these changes affect his growth. These studies are of great significance for understanding the nature of characters and social identity. The third chapter mainly discusses the adoption process of adopted son Sean Greyjoy. If the aforementioned two persons are born with special identities, then Sean, who was originally a nobleman, was reduced to his adopted son because of fate. How did the status of adoptive son affect him?In the era of noble power struggle,as a heterogeneity in the family, how did he resolve discrimination? What are the profound influences of different family cultures on his behavior? These are the contents of this chapter. In addition to the identity contradiction between the individual and the family, the individual and other families, families and clan,Westeros and strangers also have very complicated relationships with each other.Among them, the content related to Tyrion,Jon and Sean will also be within the scope of this chapter's ethnic identity research. In order to gain a deeper understanding of the growth trajectory of the marginal characters in A Song of Ice and Fire and how to achieve multiple identities. The final chapter is the conclusion.Through a summary analysis of the above self-identity,social identity, and ethnic identity,I will further analysis the process, nodes, results, and meanings of marginal characters in the novel to achieve identity. As a novel that explores human nature and pays attention to society,Martin has constructed a magnificent historical background and a complicated social environment, and has fully demonstrated the growth process of social marginal characters. It is a difficult process for a character in a novel to lose identity and realize identity. From losing oneself to finding oneself is a difficult process, especially for marginalized people. The author adopts the writing method of fantasy novels and insinuates the real society by adapting history. The rich imagination plot makes the novel very interesting to read, but it also prompts the reader to think deeply about the marginalized characters in real life. The novel also has great enlightening significance for readers to realize themselves, integrate into society, and integrate into ethnic groups.
