The Master Supplier Agreement is a commercial contract which defines the mutual rights and obligations between the supplier and the customer so as to achieve an economic aim.The sentence structure of business contracts is complicated with many long sentences.Conditionals are also widely used in business contracts. While translating this Master Supplier Agreement, the translator found that there are plenty of conditionals in the material marked by "if","when",etc.Since conditionals account for a large proportion of the selected text,it is necessary for the author to systematically explore the translation strategies of conditionals. There are differences between the sentence structures in Chinese and English languages.English sentences are featured by Hypotaxis while Chinese sentences by Parataxis. When translating conditionals in this Master Supplier Agreement, the translator must first clarify the types of conditionals and then adopt corresponding translation strategies.According to Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language, conditionals are divided into explicit conditionals and implicit conditionals. On the basis of the text characteristics of The Master Supplier Agreement and previous studies, the author further divided conditionals in the selected text into implicit conditionals marked by "if","provided that","in the event that","when" and "unless",and explicit conditionals in which conditions are implied by prepositional phrases and attributive clauses.Strategies of literal translation and free translation are employed and some translation techniques like conversion, amplification, and splitting are used in these two types of conditionals so as to transfer the original information accurately and effectively.Ultimately, the equivalence of the original language and the translation in content and legal effect can be achieved.
