A Study Of The English Version Of HuoZhe From Translation Ethics

Huozhe is the magnum opus of Yu Hua,a prominent writer in contemporary China.Its English version To Live: A Novel(shorted as To Live below)by Michael Berry,was warmly accepted since its publication.However,the number of translation studies on this version is small,and the analyses focus on either textual factors or extra-textual factors.Besides,there is few studies conducted from the perspective of translation ethics.Five models of translation ethics by Andrew Chesterman are about guiding principles for translation on both the micro-level and the macro-level,which are objective and systematic.Based on the theory of translation ethics,this thesis analyzes the original text Huozhe and the English translation To Live,by means of quantitative and qualitative analysis,to answer two questions: First,whether Andrew Chesterman's models of translation ethics are followed in translation or not? Second,when following five models of translation ethics,what translation strategies does Michael Berry prefer in translating,especially in translating culture-loaded items? This study shows that: Firstly,five models of translation ethics are followed in Michael Berry's translation.Secondly,following five models of translation ethics,Berry flexibly adopts various strategies,such as literal translation and replacement,and when translating culture-loaded items,Berry keeps a balanced choice between foreignization and domestication.This thesis analyzes Michael Berry's To Live by depending on Andrew Chesterman's models of translation ethics,which not only adds a new perspective to studies on To Live,but also sets a good example for spreading Chinese novel translation to other countries.
