Adult education is an integral part of our education system. In recent years especially the spread of lifelong education and the increasingly prominent global integration factors have made the development of adult education more and more rapid, and the study of English subjects is the most extensive in adult education. Therefore, the study of teacher-student verbal interaction in adult English classrooms is conducive to measuring classroom quality and reflecting its characteristics from the side. This study uses a combination of literature analysis, observation, and interview methods to randomly select three English classes of Shanghai Foreign Studies University to conduct case studies. And the status quo and characteristics of verbal interaction between teachers and students in adult English classes in different classes were investigated. In the analysis of the results and the interviews with teachers and students,we explore the factors that affect the verbal interaction between teachers and students in adult English classrooms, and finally make suggestions based on the theory and analysis results. The main findings of this study are:(1)In the classroom verbal behavior structure, the teacher's verbal ratio is significantly higher than the student's verbal ratio, and the teacher's direct teaching is the main type in the classroom; In the teacher's verbal behavior structure, the questions raised by teachers are mainly open questions and closed questions, and they focus on giving positive feedback to students.Teachers are more likely to directly affect students by teaching, asking questions, and repeating questions; In the structure of the students' verbal behaviors.Due to the differences in the types of teacher interactions, the students answer questions differently. In the classes that tend to interact with the teachers, the rate of students' active response is high;In the classes that tend to interact with one member, the students have a high rate of passive responses, which indicates that the classroom is still more teacher-led.In terms of the characteristics of question and answer between the teacher and student. There are two types:the first is that students respond actively or keep silent. When the students respond actively, the teacher accept the answer or ask for more details. And if the students keep silent, the teacher will answer by himself or repeat questions. The other is that the teacher asks questions and assigns students to answer, and the teacher gives feedback to the students' answers.Generally speaking, the main forms of interaction in adult English classrooms are that teachers ask questions and then students answer. The interactive content are mainly questions in textbook. The forms of interaction are mainly teacher-class interaction and teacher-interaction.And there is no group activity.(2)The problems of teacher-student verbal interaction in adult English classes are:Classroom interaction structure is unevenly distributed and teachers have high verbal ratios;Only a few students actively participate in classroom interactions; There is a single type of teacher-student interaction, mainly focusing on teacher-class interaction or teacher-single student interaction;Teacher-student interaction tends to a negative mode, that is to say,due to the limited English level of students and the lack of deep understanding of students' knowledge background and storage,teacher-student interaction often ends with the reduced motivation of both teachers and students.(3)Factors affecting the verbal interaction between teachers and students in adult English classes include:the factors about teachers:teaching style and expectations of students;the factors about students:students' English proficiency and learning motivation;the relationship between teacher and student:Insufficient teacher-student relationship affects teachers' judgment on students and students' trust in teachers, and therefore affects the content and efficiency of teacher-student interaction.Based on the above research conclusions, the author gives his own suggestions based on the sociology and psychology theory,as well as the characteristics and problems of the interaction between teachers and students in adult English classrooms.
