Ratner's Star is a science fiction with comic elements written by Don Delillo,an outstanding American novelist in 1976.It mainly describes the story about a math prodigy Billy and a group of researchers who decode mysterious information from outer space.The original author describes substances and objects with a cold and satiric tone,revealing the social situation of American people's self-interest and their futile effort.Chapter 10 Opposites and an excerpt of Chapter 11 Sequence are chosen as the translation material.This part mainly tells the story about a boy Billy,going to the mysterious Great Hole and participating in the Nobel Prize award ceremony,who meets Ratner and some people around him as well as gets to know Ratner's past experience.Later,Billy decides to stay there and to break codes with others.In the process of translation,the author finds that dialogues take up a large part in the novel.They can reflect personalities and psychological states of communicators,which are most important bases for understanding characters.Adaptation theory is proposed by Belgian linguist Jef Verschueren and it reflects the mutual adaptation between language using environment and choices of language structure.Language using can be analyzed and described from contextual correlates of adaptability,structural objects of adaptability,dynamics of adaptability and salience of adaptation processes.Contextual Adaptation Theory plays an important role that can make readers have a deep understanding of characters' personalities and language characteristics of the original text in different contexts.Contextual Adaptation Theory is combined and different translation strategies are adopted in translating dialogues of characters in order to adapt to communicative context and linguistic context,such as addition,annotation and literal translation.The report aims to provide reference for language choices in fictional dialogues translation.Through the analysis of cases in the novel,the author discusses the adaptability of Verschueren's Contextual Adaptation Theory in fictional dialogues translation.In addition,the author hopes the translation report can provide references for language research into Ratner's Star,provide new ideas in literature appreciation and improve quality of literary translation.
