The Confucius Institute at the Ateneo de Manila University of the Philippines(hereinafter referred to as "Ateneo Confucius Institute")is aimed at adult students from all walks of life in the Philippines.Its Chinese teaching is different from that of Chinese school and other Confucius Institutes in the Philippines.The author found many cases of Chinese teaching and classroom management which are worthy to study when I was a Chinese teacher in the Ateneo Confucius Institute.Therefore,I recorded these cases through classroom observation and recording,and analyzed them by using Chinese pronunciation,vocabulary,grammar,Chinese characters,classroom management and other relevant theories.The purpose is to find out the problems in Chinese teaching,teaching materials,teacher training and management of the Confucius Institute in Ateneo,so as to provide references for the Confucius Institute and other teachers to improve their teaching.This paper is divided into six chapters:The first chapter mainly introduces the background,purpose and significance of the topic,research scope and methods.In addition,the author summarizes the previous researches from two aspects: the survey of Chinese teaching in the Philippines and the case study of Chinese teaching in the Philippines.The second chapter introduces the general situation of Chinese teaching in Ateneo Confucius Institute from five aspects: curriculum,teachers,students,teaching materials and examination.The third chapter is the main part of the paper,which describes the teaching cases of Chinese such as pronunciation,vocabulary,grammar and Chinese characters,and analyzes them with Chinese knowledge and teaching theories.Phonetic teaching cases include initials,finals,tones and phonetic spelling cases.Vocabulary teaching cases include vocabulary practice cases and vocabulary review cases;Grammar teaching cases include grammar teaching cases and practice cases;Chinese character teaching cases include Chinese character reading teaching cases and teaching cases of Chinese character writing.The fourth chapter is also the main part of the paper.It describes the cases of Chinese classroom management problems in Ateneo Confucius Institute,including three types of classroom management problems caused by teachers,students and environment.The fifth chapter is aimed at the problems existing in the teaching of Chinese in Ateneo de manila university Confucius institute,and puts forward the suggestions from both Confucius institute and Chinese teachers.The sixth chapter is the conclusion of the paper,which summarizes the experience and shortcomings of Chinese teaching in Ateneo Confucius institute,reflect on the possible problems in the research.
