In consecutive interpreting practice, disfluency may affect the quality of interpreting. This report is based on the author's consecutive interpreting practice in a workshop at the Third International Conference on Existential Psychology. The report discusses the disfluency phenomenon in English-Chinese consecutive interpreting, including what disfluency is and the reasons for the occurrence of disfluency in English-Chinese consecutive interpreting.Based on the analysis on the author's interpreting transcription and post-interpreting reflection,it discusses the reasons for the occurrence of disfluency in English-Chinese consecutive interpreting, namely disfluencies caused by notes,by reformulation and by self-monitoring.By analyzing the author's reflection and reading professional interpreters' experience summary and the analysis on their performance, the author summarizes 3 coping tactics to deal with the situation when an interpreter recognizes s/he is facing an interpreting difficulty and a disfluency is about to take place. They are: 1)continue the discourse based on the pattern of the produced discourse,2)use repair juxtaposition, and 3)using proper intended fillers. While disfluency is related to the on-site interpreting,it has much to do with the interpreter's capability.Based on the author's experience and her training in interpreting training program, she also has some suggestions for trainee interpreters to improve their basic interpreting capabilities. They are 1)reading bilingual materials, and 2)improving awareness on deverbalizing the original discourse. This report aims to provide further evidence to the research on disfluencies in interpreting, and to make contributions by offering suggestions to trainee interpreters to sharpen their skills to further improve their capability in consecutive interpreting.
