Fluency is considered as a critical criterion for evaluating the quality of interpretation.Disfluencies in interpreting,if too many, would not only affect the delivery of information, but also diminish audiences' trust in the interpreter. Therefore, all interpreters have to try their best to avoid disfluencies. This thesis studies the author's interpretation at Ian Newton's Speech on Covid-19 in Refugee Camps, identifies the reasons for disfluencies in English-to-Chinese consecutive interpretation and explores feasible coping strategies. The author categories disfluencies into silent pause, filled pause, repeat and self-correction and selects thirteen typical examples of disfluencies from the interpretation. After analyzing examples respectively, the author finds three reasons behind those disfluencies: insufficient background knowledge, illogical structure of note-taking and inappropriate language organization.Based on the author's personal experience and previous studies by other scholars, this thesis proposes that in order to avoid disfluencies, interpreters should enrich their knowledge base by preparing for the interpretation and comprehending more background knowledge, improve their interpreting skill by increasing the efficiency of note-taking and enhancing self-monitoring,and work on their language proficiency by enhancing listening and comprehension ability and improving flexibility of the target language.
