Maritime Safety Committee(MSC)is the highest technical institution of IMO and its meetings are one of the most influential conferences in the maritime field of the world.As a big shipping nation,China needs to be well informed about the contents of the meetings.However,the documents contain many complex sentences and a large number of post-modifiers of nouns,which makes them difficult to translate.The translator mainly focuses on post-modifiers of nouns.This paper classifies noun post-modifiers into three kinds,namely prepositional phrases,non-finite verb phrases and relative clauses.In order to deliver the true meaning of the source language,the author summarizes five translation methods on the basis of the theory of static equivalence,namely inversion translation,conversion translation,unmarked translation,marked translation and combining translation.The translator summarizes the techniques used to translate the post-modifiers of nouns in maritime documents and draws the conclusion of the translation methods and implications.When translating prepositional phrases and non-finite verb phrases,the translator often uses inversion translation and conversion translation.When translating relative clauses,unmarked translation,marked translation and combining translation are often used.It is hoped that the translation methods summarized in this translation practice report can provide reference to the future translation of maritime conference documents. |
