With the rapid development of economy and society,the competition in different fields is becoming increasingly fierce in contemporary society.The requirement for the talents attaches more importance to cooperative ability in addition to professional knowledge.Cooperative learning is also one of the three learning methods proposed by the New Curriculum Reform.However,in traditional English teaching,teacher-centered method is still the main teaching mode,where teachers play the teaching role,while the students just listen passively lack of positive participation and learning interest.This paper takes two classes of grade one in the author's practice senior high school in Mudanjiang,Heilongjiang province as the research subject.In English teaching,cooperative learning is applied.By distributing questionnaires and learning logs to the students,interviewing the teachers and students respectively,and classroom observation as well as comparing the data before and after the application of cooperative learning so as to explore whether the cooperative learning is able to improve the students' study interest,learning motivation and the cooperative ability.The factors influencing the cooperative learning are also investigated.The paper is aimed at finding out the problems in cooperative learning,proposing reasonable suggestions and providing references to the further exploration of the application of cooperative learning in senior high school English instruction.Through the research,the author finds out the students' study interest,learning motivation and cooperative ability have improved.The students attach great importance to cooperative ability,their cooperative awareness improves and they learn a lot of communication strategies.The students become better at listening and communicating than before,and the medium-level students progress most.After the application of cooperative learning,students have clearer study purpose.With regard to study interest,cooperative learning makes students' study interest strengthened.Study interest of medium-level students improves most,top-level students are in the middle and low-level students stay the least.Besides,students' autonomous learning ability is also motivated.They spend more time on English after class and are able to think out more approaches to difficulties in study.Finally,the factors influencing effective cooperative learning are explored including the two aspects of teachers and students.Therefore,both teachers and students are supposed to target the current situation of cooperative learning application in English instruction and overcome the obstacles to improve the English instruction gradually.
