A First Reading Book for Students of Colloquial Chinese – Chinese Merry Tales,written by Italian diplomat to China,is a spoken book for westerners to learn Chinese.The first edition of the book was adapted from 99 traditional Chinese fables and jokes in 1901,which retains many characteristics of Beijing dialect.This paper focuses on the following aspects of the study of A First Reading Book for Students of Colloquial Chinese – Chinese Merry Tales:1.The study of the language features of A First Reading Book for Students of Colloquial Chinese – Chinese Merry Tales is mainly from two aspects: vocabulary and grammar.In terms of vocabulary,there are a large number of inverse morphemes words and ErHuaCi in the book.We study the inverse morphemes words from four aspects: appearance,classification,characteristics and functions.And there are a large number of ErHuaCi in the book,472 times in total.The meaning function of the word is clear,the structure of the word tends to be regular and the ending effect is significant.In grammar,it is mainly studied from three aspects.Firstly,the ‘ verb+le+object+le ’construction words of the book has strong subjectivity and it is mainly used as predicate in sentences to explain the action or state of the subject;In addition,Grammar research of "very" and "ruthless" are common in the book,both of them have the function of adverb and adjective,but as adverb usage accounts for 88.89% of the total usage,which is different from modern Chinese usage.This paper classifies and analyzes them.On the other hand,there are a lot of disposal sentences in the book.This paper divides disposal sentences into typical structure and atypical structure according to the structural type,and further analyzes the typical structure from the semantic aspect.2.The research on the teaching characteristics of A First Reading Book for Students of Colloquial Chinese – Chinese Merry Tales mainly includes the teaching content,the setting of the difficulty and the teaching of the cultural factors.The 99 texts of the textbook are mainly from joke books of Ming and Qing Dynasties.The author adapted these jokes according to the principles of colloquialism and standardization.The overall length of the textbook changes from short to long,the average sentence length continues to increase,from easy to difficult,and gradually goes deep,which is suitable for primary level students.There are 196 cultural factors in the book,such as social communication,life style,customs and habits.The author arranges cultural factors according to the principles of interest,practicality and typicality,so that learners can better understand Chinese culture and expand their knowledge.3.The book’s enlightenment to the current Chinese teaching: the book the shows the language characteristics of Beijing Mandarin in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China,uses a large number of Beijing dialect words and other dialect words,and the situation is diversified,which reflects the daily life of Beijing in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China.The content is humorous,the length changes from short to long,and there is a corresponding Chinese and English directory,which is more in line with the learning habits of learners,and has some inspiration for TCFL.However,the content of the book is not annotated,and the topic reflects the life of the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China,which is not suitable for the current teaching of TCFL.
