On the basis of inheriting the tradition of Chinese classical novels and absorbing western literary ideas,Jin Yong has become one of the representatives of the new school of martial arts fiction. His works are not only loved by the Chinese but also widely spread in the Confucian cultural circle.Shediao Yingxiong Zhuan, which was serialized in the Hong Kong Commercial Daily from1957 to 1959,was the novel that established his status as the “leader” of the martial arts writers. In February 2018,sixty years after its publication, the first volume of its English-language translation,Legends of the Condor Heroes I: A Hero Born, was published by MacLehose Press for sale worldwide. As a niche translated novel,it was prominently featured in mainstream British bookshops and reprinted seven times within two months of publication.Eco-Translatology,proposed by professor Hu Gengshen,is a research paradigm of translation from the ecological perspective, which is based on the isomorphic metaphor of translational ecology and natural ecology. This research paradigm is based on the concept of eco-holism,based on oriental eco-wisdom,and based on the theory of “adaptation/selection”.It systematically explores the translational ecology, textual ecology, and “translation community”ecology and their interactions and relationships. From the ecological perspective,a comprehensive review and description of the translational ecology and the translation theory are made. This study systematically studies the translation of Shediao Yingxiong Zhuan from the perspective of Eco-Translatology.The first part is the introduction;the second part introduces the translational eco-environment of the original text, including the introduction of the original author and the original text, followed by a literature review and theoretical basis, and then an analysis of the translation process, which mainly focuses on the following two aspects: the selective adaptation Anna Holmwood made to the translational eco-environment from the internal and external aspects and the adaptive selection she made to the translationaleco-environment from linguistic, cultural and communicative dimensions. The last part is the summary. The results show that as a native English speaker who loves Chinese culture, has studied Chinese systematically, has experience in translating modern literary works, and is interested in Jin Yong,Holmwood's ability is sufficient to control the translation of Shediao Yingxiong Zhuan.Years of experience as a literary agent has given her unique insights into the needs of the market and target readers. The translation of the linguistic dimension conforms to the lexical characteristics of the target language and retains the syntactic characteristics of the original language. In the translation of the cultural dimension, different treatments have been made to different cultures. The translation of “wu” culture and ethnic culture retains the characteristics of the original culture, and the “xia” cultural aspect reduces the reading difficulty of target readers according to the cultural characteristics of the target language. In order to maintain the readability of the translation, the translator has omitted a part of the historical background and simplified the geographical culture and address terms in the communicative dimension. The study of the English version of Shediao Yingxiong Zhuan based on Eco-Translatology can strengthen the understanding of Eco-Translatology and verify its applicability and extensiveness in translation practice. The success of Holmwood's translation in Western markets can also provide a reference for the overseas promotion of Chinese culture.
