Chinese martial arts fictions are most well-known for Chinese Kung Fu,chivalric spirit, beautiful Chinese language and traditional Chinese culture in Chinese-speaking communities worldwide. They are an indispensable and treasured part of both Chinese literature and culture. However, the English translations of these novels are quite limited in number. And academic studies on their translations mainly focused on English translations of several novels, including Fox Volant of the Snowy Mountain,The Deer and The Cauldron and The Book and The Sword.Studies about them were generally preoccupied with translations of specific culture-loaded words, translation strategies and methods,cross-culture interpretations based on specific translation theories and some literature review studies. What's more, since the first printed English translation of Jin Yong's She Diao Ying Xiong Zhuan did not come out until2018,few studies on it have been found, which leaves a lot of research space and a high research value. This study conducts a study of English translations of Chinese martial arts fictions through a case analysis of the English version of She Diao Ying Xiong Zhuan named A Hero Born by Anna Holmwood under the guidance of Eco-translatology's evaluation criterion which will make the evaluation of Anna Holmwood's A Hero Born more comprehensive. The evaluation criterion of Eco-translatology is the “degree of holistic adaptation and selection”,which includes three aspects to refer to.They are: degree of multi-dimensional transformation, reader's feedback and translator quality.During the evaluation, this study makes a comparative analysis of the original version of Jin Yong's She Diao Ying Xiong Zhuan and its English translation by Anna Holmwood from linguistic, cultural and communicative dimensions. In addition, this study analyzes the English version from the macro aspects of reader's feedback and translator quality. It is found through analysis that A Hero Born has a relatively high degree of holistic adaptation and selection. However, there still exist some evident limitations including ununified translation of martial artists' names bringing about confusion for the target readers, total foreignization strategy leading to loss of martial arts culturalconceptions and compromised communication of wuxia spirit caused by inappropriate omissions. To address these problems, some suggestions are made on the English translation of Chinese martial arts novels: unifying translation of martial artists' names, compiling dictionaries on wuxia culture-related terms, focusing more on communication of wuxia spirit and guaranteeing the high translator's quality. This study is divided into five chapters.Chapter 1 gives a brief introduction of the research background, purpose, significance, questions, and methodology used in this study.Chapter 2 makes a detailed explanation of Eco-translatology,including its origin, development and main concepts, especially the Eco-translatological evaluation criterion which is used in the following chapter for case analysis.Chapter 3 is the literature review part, including previous studies of the English translation of Chinese martial arts fictions and Eco-translatology,an introduction of Jin Yong's She Diao Ying Xiong Zhuan???????and its English translation by Anna Holmwood(???).Chapter 4 conducts a detailed analysis and evaluation of A Hero Born under the guidance of Eco-translatological evaluation criterion in order to make justified comments on the success and weakness of the novel's English Version.Chapter 5draws a conclusion of its findings, offers inspirational suggestions for both English translations of Chinese martial arts fiction and their future studies and points out the limitations of this study.
