On Translating Informative Texts Into Chinese From The Perspective Of Translation Compensation Theory

Since ancient times,education has played a vital role in the development of a country.In educational systems,math and science are in the top priority.Study methods of math and science have rarely been dealt with so far.Therefore,the translation of study methods is of great research value.This is a report on the translation of the chapters,“Open the door”,“Preventing procrastination” and “Avoiding overconfidence” in A Mind for Numbers written by Barbara Oakley.Based on the text analysis theory of Newmark,this report expounds the characteristics of the informative texts and the strategies of Translation Compensation Theory.As for the informative text,translation compensation at lexical level and discourse level is the most common,and the translation compensation at cultural level takes the second place.The least common translation compensation occurs at the aesthetic level.To present the meaning of the original text precisely and make sure that the target language readers can share the same feeling with the source language readers,the application of techniques like amplification,generalization and specification is discussed at different compensation levels of lexis,discourse,culture,and aesthetics under the guidance of Translation Compensation Theory.In the translation field,the source language and the target language are not completely equivalent.The translation compensation theory is a way to compensate the loss of meaning as much as possible to maintain the meaning of the original text.Under the guidance of translation compensation theory,the translator has not only acquired the translation ability,but also made a modest contribution to the education of the mathematic and science disciplines through a large number of translation practice and research.
