After 16 years of development,the Confucius Institute has changed from scale construction to connotation development.For many years,"teachers","teaching materials" and "teaching methods" which have been perplexing the policy makers of international promotion of Chinese language and culture,the administrators of the Confucius Institute and the front-line teachers are still worthy of study and discussion by the academic circles and relevant departments.The "teachers" problem is still the core.The quality of teachers is directly related to the education quality of the Confucius Institute and the effect of international promotion of Chinese language and culture,which is an important factor affecting the sustainable development of the Confucius Institute.How to ensure the selection of sufficient and excellent Chinese teachers to overseas Confucius Institutes,how to ensure that Chinese teachers can adapt to the local learning situation and teaching environment,and how to carry out teaching according to local conditions are the crucial problems that all Confucius Institutes have to face and solve.This research takes the Confucius Institute in Edmonton(CIE),Canada as an example,survey the former and current public Chinese teachers and teaching volunteers of CIE by interviews and questionnaires,and at the same time compares the survey results of those sent by Shandong Province to teach Chinese in other countries and regions,so as to understand the basic information of teachers of CIE,teaching and management,training and further study,cross-cultural conflicts,and suggestions for the management and operation of Confucius Institute.This research analyzes the "individuality" and "generality" embodied in the “teacher”problem of CIE,and puts forward scientific thinking and feasible suggestions on the supply,quantity,quality,teaching level,professional development and professional team construction of teachers for the Confucius Institute,hoping to provide the real information and reference for researchers and policy makers,and a modest contribution to the sustainable development of the Confucius Institute and the whole undertaking of the international promotion of Chinese language and culture.This research suggests that to solve all kinds of problems of Confucius Institute teachers fundamentally,we should firstly gain more support from authoritative departments,expand the source of domestic teachers through the construction of new teacher-cultivating mode and directed training,and build a stable and sustainable local teacher team,so as to form a professional teacher force dedicated to the Confucius Institute.In addition,we should attach great importance to the professional development of teachers,strengthen the pre-training and on-the-job training,and constantly improve the quality of teachers.As for the Chinese teachers and volunteers of Confucius Institute who shoulder the mission of international promotion of Chinese language,Hanban and relevant departments should provide them with logistics support,care about their work,life and psychological conditions during their oversea service,solve their anxiety about the career development,enhance their professional happiness and attraction,so as to better promote Chinese language,spread Chinese culture and serve the national strategy.
