For a long time,BBC documentaries have been widely welcomed by the audience from all parts of the world.More and more people become interested in the research on documentaries.A large number of subtitle translation versions of documentaries have appeared on various media, but the overall quality of the translated versions still needs to be improved. However, few people specialize in subtitle translation of documentaries and it is not easy for audience to find professional studies on the translation of such text. Therefore, there is a lot of space to be explored in this type of translation. The first chapter of this thesis introduces the ground of the task, including the reason of selecting the text, the source of the text and the parallel text.In this chapter, the author makes a preliminary judgment on text type and word style. The second chapter is the description of the translation process. In this chapter, the author introduces the related translation theories and an overall description of the functional equivalence theory. The third chapter is about the case analysis and the author analyzes the example sentences from the lexical and syntactic levels. The lexical level includes discussions of the conversion in English-Chinese translation, such as the conversion of nouns to adjectives or adverbs, verbs to adjectives or adverbs. In addition,as for the aspect of the meaning extension of words, the author selects the specific and abstract meaning of words for in-depth analysis. At the same time, the author also find out example sentences which use the translation tactics of omission and addition,by comparing different translation methods, the author illustrates the reason and the theory basis for using this two translation tactics. In chapter three, the author elaborates the selected sentences from the syntactic level, analyzes these examples by combining the functional equivalence theory and translation strategy, and comprehensively explained how to adjust the order to achieve better translation effect. On the other hand, the author lists some sentences which are translated by splitting and combining, and analyze how to use splitting and combining translation methods to effectively convey the meaning of the original text.Based on the functional equivalence theory, the author designs the main part of the thesis from the perspective of receivers and takes the subtitles of the first five episodes of the first season of the Planet Earth as the research subject to carry out the English-Chinese translation practice and study the subtitle translation of documentaries.Through the analysis of the text and the understanding of functional equivalence theory, the author has new ideas about the translation methods of different styles based on functional equivalence theory and understood the different guiding functions of translation theories on different translation practices. However, for translators, how to select effective translation methods and strategies is a kind of recondite knowledge,it needs long term practice. At the same time, translators should analyze the difficulties in translation progress according to the specific context, and then find out the best translation method for the text.
