Metonymic Translation Research Of Metaphors In Xi Jinping Wit And Vision

The widespread use of conceptual metaphors is a major linguistic feature of Xi Jinping Wit and Vision book.The conceptual metaphors in the book make the abstract political language more vivid,appealing and persuasive.Therefore,it is necessary to study how the conceptual metaphors in this book are translated into English,so that English readers can feel the Chinese ideology of governance and political attitude embedded in conceptual metaphors.Although many scholars have done research on conceptual metaphors and their English translations,the study of English translations of conceptual metaphors in political discourses has rarely been dealt with them.Political speech plays a very important role at home and abroad,and metaphor is an extremely useful tool in political speech.Based on the corpus research method,this paper takes conceptual metaphor and metonymic translation as the theoretical basis,selects the Chinese and English translations in Xi Jinping Wit and Vision as corpora,and uses AntConc to label and retrieve metaphors in the text.Case studies and combination of qualitative methods are used to classify conceptual metaphors in the book.Under the perspective and guidance of metonymic translation theory,the translation methods used in conceptual metaphors in the book,the influencing factors of translation methods and translation characteristics are summarized.This thesis specifically studies the following three issues:(1)What are the major conceptual metaphors in the Xi Jinping's speeches based on Xi Jinping Wit and Vision?(2)How have the conceptual metaphors of Xi Jinping's speeches been translated into English based on Xi Jinping Wit and Vision? What translation strategies are used?(3)Why do they use these translation strategies from the perspective of metonymic translation?Studies have shown that there are many types of metaphors in Xi Jinping Wit and Vision,mainly including four types: animal metaphors,food metaphors,disease metaphors,and war metaphors.The new theory of metonymic translation is used when translating metaphors into English.The main translation strategies used in theprocess of translation are: the correspondence of words from the perspective of metonymic translation;the correlation of two things in the cognitive framework;use the target language to properly adjust the source language.The correlation of two things in the cognitive framework is mainly analyzed through several aspects,such as part for whole,concrete for abstract and overall for local,and abstract for specific and so on.And the appropriate adjustment of the source language with the target language is mainly analyzed as part-of-speech conversion,adding words,deleting words,etc.Through analysis,these translation methods are applied in the corpus.In the process of translating Chinese-English metaphors,it is necessary to flexibly and comprehensively adopt multiple methods to convey the semantics to the readers of the target language to the greatest extent.This study uses a relatively new translation method to analyze conceptual metaphors in political discourse,namely,metonymic translation theory,so that readers in the source and target domains can better understand the connotation of political discourse and political strategies.Theoretical innovation provides an important perspective and practical significance for future metaphor translation and research.
