Comparative Study On Two Chinese Versions Of Major Barbara: From A Perspective Of Interpersonal Function

For a long time,Chinese and Western translation theorists have been making efforts to put forward a number of guiding principles about literary translation.For example,Nida's functional equivalent theory,Yan Fu's theory of faithfulness,expressiveness and elegance in translation.However,as one of the important components of literary translation,the attention paid to drama translation is very limited.As far as the study of drama translation is concerned,there is a lack of sufficient theoretical support for a long time.Especially due to the differences between Chinese and Western culture,foreign drama translation has been developing slowly.Therefore,for foreign drama works,it is difficult to be accepted and understood by Chinese audiences and readers.In order to analyze the interpersonal meaning of different discourses,interpersonal function theory in functional linguistics is widely used in science and technology discourses,advertisements and speeches.In recent years,more and more studies has combined interpersonal function with drama translation.This paper will start with the mood system,modality system and address forms of interpersonal function system to explore the specific application of interpersonal function in the original Major Barbara and the translation versions translated by Lin Haozhuang and Ying Ruocheng.In this paper,the author mainly puts forward two questions.Firstly,In the two Chinese translations,what functions can be achieved by the mood system,modality system and address forms of the interpersonal function theory? Secondly,different texts are selected in this paper.Which text is more suitable for the theatrical audiences?The author finds that by analyzing the mood system,modality system and address forms of the interpersonal function in the text,we can understand the characters' personalities,emotions,communication modes and power status.Ying Ruocheng attaches great importance to the direct audience effect of drama.Meanwhile,he is also an excellent actor and director.He has his own unique views and strategies in the aspect of dramatranslation.Therefore,his translation style is more colloquial.At the same time,Lin Haozhuang's translation adds a lot of footnotes to help readers understand the text,so the translation style is more written.Generally speaking,Ying Ruocheng's translation is more suitable for theatrical audiences,However,Lin Haozhuang's translation is more suitable for readers.The author hopes that the above analysis can arouse people's attention to drama translation and provide theoretical support for people's communication in real life.
