The Translation Of Must You Go From The Perspective Of Catford's Translation Shift Theory

The translation shift theory was firstly brought up by Catford in his book A Linguistic Theory of Translation and it detailedly analyzes the translation shifts happening on and below the sentence level.Clearly classified and universally acquirable,Catford's theory focuses more on the language itself and has a profound influence on subsequent translation theory.Thus,the author puts Catford's theory into practice.Cases in this paper are picked from the tenth and eleventh chapters of Must You Go,authored by Antonia Fraser,the second wife of Harold Pinter who was a Nobel laureate in Literature in 2005.Fraser draws both from her memories and the diaries which she started to keep in October 1968 to write Must You Go.It is a pity that this book has not a Chinese version yet.And I hope to obtain a comprehensive view of Pinter through this translation practice.The thesis is made up of four parts.Part One is introduction,including the background of the translation project and the feature of source text.Part Two elaborates translation shift theory and states briefly its application.The third part mainly analyzes some selected examples from the following four aspects:level shifts,structure shifts,class shifts and unit shifts.The last part makes a conclusion.
