A Study Of Chinese Literature From The Perspective Of Overseas Publicity(Jan.1976-Dec.1980)

The English version of Chinese Literature,founded on October 1,1951,has played an important role as a cultural emissary and participated in the publicity work of Chinese culture during the 17 years of the founding of People's Republic of China(1949-1966),the Cultural Revolution(1966-1976)and the new period(since 1976).In the process of constructing the national image of P.R.China,the outward translation of literature plays an important part.This thesis employs all the works published in the English version of Chinese Literature from January 1976 to December 1980(Chinese modern and contemporary writers' texts,Chinese political leaders' texts and magazine cover pictures)as an analyzing medium,and it attemps to explore the issue of choice in the outward translation of Chinese Literature(object,title,and theme).It involves the translation and introduction to out world of Chinese modern / contemporary literary works,literary(and arts)policy,and art works on covers,and this thesis also attempts to restore the historic process of P.R.China's national image construction under the direction of outward political publication,and the changes in cultural concepts.In general,China's national image has been effectively conveyed in the very process of translation of Chinese literature(arts),but the nature of the journal Chinese Literature is bound to make it in the process of undertaking the building of national image,showing synchronization with the political environment,This can be seen clearly from the choice of the writers and their works,the publication of the politician's texts,and the employment of the cover pictures.The practice of outward publicization in this period(1976-1980)is of special significance for the reflection of the historic experience of China's outward publicization under the complex international background.
