A Reproduction Study Of The Lesding Of Character In English Version Of Huozhe-Taking Michael Berry's English Version To Live As A Case

As we all know,the literary image of the character is one of the important factors in literary works.Throughout the Chinese and foreign history of literature,we can find that the literary image of the character in literary works enjoys an important position in literary works,particularly in narrative works.The novel Huozhe,as one of literary works,is a masterpiece of Yuhua,a famous writer and its English version is finished by an American scholar,Michael Berry.Once appearance,it has become a massive hit in the circle of literature at home and abroad and has been awarded many big awards,such as the Greenzana Carver prize in Italy.One of the reasons why it is so popular is that Huozhe builds a classic literary image— a strong,optimistic man called Fugui,who has made a deep impression on people.In recent years,a variety of researches into its English version To Live by many scholars have been conducted under the theory of Scopes,Toury's translation norms,Eco-translatology and so on.No research,however,has been conducted into the representation of the character in the English version from the perspective of aesthetic value.This thesis will try to tentatively explore the representation of the literary figure in the English version.The literary image of protagonist called Fugui in Huozhe differs in two stages.In the early stage,he was a cynical,dissipated and young master;in the later stage,he was simple,honest and hard-working farmer.Taking these two aspects of the literary image of Fugui as entry point,this thesis carefully selected 34 representative examples covering Fugui's appearance description,language description,actions description and mental description.On the basis of the theory of characterization,this thesis will analyze how the literary figure is represented inthe English version To Live in these aspects.Finally,compared with the original text,it will analyze whether the literary figure is successfully represented in English version To Live or not.If not,this thesis will analyze the reasons.The study found that the literary image of the character was basically represented in the English version.In the representation of appearance,the translator Michael Berry grasped the author's attitude to Fugui and the detailed description of his appearance in the translation.On the basis of conveying the content,he retained the original rhetorical devices in appearance description,vividly representing the character to the target readers.In the representation of language,the translator paid attention to the tone and discourse features of the character and adopted a combination of a variety of translation strategies,such as tone conversion,conversion of sentence patterns or transfer of the subject and the topic sentence,representing the image of Fugui in the two stages to the target readers.In the representation of actions,the translator captured the features of rapidity,coherence and accuracy of actions,added appropriate conjunctions and preserved the modifiers in the translation,representing the image of Fugui to target readers.In the representation of mentality,the translator grasped the rich emotional changes of Fugui,accurately representing the complex inner activities of Fugui to the target readers.However,it was inevitable that some word-to-word translations occurred in the translation,which resulted in the loss of the meaning of the original text,failing to represent the image of Fugui.In general,the translator Michael Berry,considering the differences of the cultures and two languages,and ways of thinking,constantly sought a balance between them in the translation and adopted the method of combining literal translation and free translation,making the original character carry the spirit of the original character and meanwhile satisfy target readers' reading habits,and conveying the author's intention and humanistic concern to target readers.
