A Corpus-based Comparison Of Translation Styles

With the rapid development of science and technology,digitalization becomes one of the trends for the humanities studies.Meanwhile,the mode of cross-disciplinary has also been widely used in various research fields.Therefore,the synthesis of corpus linguistics and translation studies has been well accepted and applied since the 1990 s.Under the guidance of linguistics,translation,literature and other theories,this synthesized discipline,based on a large amount of the authentic language data,aims to systematically analyze and expound the phenomenon,essence and other elements of translation,covering a variety of language genre like news report,literary work,etc.This thesis focuses on the comparison of translation styles by the analysis of female characterization in the two Chinese versions of Gone with the Wind.The research approaches are employed from corpus linguistics.The author builds the closed corpora of Gone with the Wind and two Chinese versions by Fu Donghua(???)and Chen Liangting(???).The study adopts the quantitative and qualitative methods and probes the narrative styles of the writer and the linguistic features of the translated texts such as characterization key indicators,rhetoric words,syntactic characteristics.The findings of the study indicate that the distinctive translation styles tell the differences of female characterization of the two Chinese versions.Generally speaking,Fu's shows a preference to attempt to assimilate the source text elements into the phraseological patterns of the target language and its female building is more focused,prominent and distinguishable,while Chen's is inclined to be discourse-oriented and much closer to the modern Chinese language and its female images are more comprehensive,detailed and colloquial but less emotionally resonating.
