In the process of academic exchanges and communication, academic translation plays a predominant role and exerts a great influence on the academic development. But problems of academic translation, such as the standardization of terminology and the understanding of original text due to its professional content, need to receive more attention and be provided with effective solution. As a newly emerged research field,corpus-based translation study covers the shortage of traditional translation study by emphasizing empirical and quantitative research.Lots of corpora have been established and masses of achievements have been made abroad in this field since 1993.However,domestic research on this area started later and is thus a little behind than abroad. This translation report, based on the translation of an academic book titled with New directions in corpus-based translation studies, which introduces the most newly developed corpora and their applications centered around seven languages, explores practical strategies in academic translation from lexical, syntactical and discourse level. In lexical level, the translator uses strategies including diction, substitution, decomposition and conversion of parts of speech. In syntactical level, recasting, splitting and inserting are applied to deal with long and complex sentences and conversion is used to change passive voice into active voice. In discourse level, the translator comes up with repetition and addition to achieve cohesion and coherence. And the tense of the target text is adjusted according to the norms of Chinese academic discourse.Besides, omission is applied to keep the examples of foreign languages except English in the original text. The aim of this translation report is to suggest effective translation strategies under the guidance of Reiss‘s text typology theory to improve the efficiency and quality of academic translation. The author hopes that the translation of this book can provide scholars, teachers and students who are engaging in corpus-based translation studies with inspiration and new research direction.
