On The Intersubjectivity In Prose Translation In The Light Of Bakhtinian Dialogism

Translation intersubjectivity refers to the interaction between the source text author,the translator and the target reader,which is the co-existence of these three subjects in the translation activities.This thesis takes translation intersubjectivity as the research object and attempts to conduct in-depth research to gain a new understanding of translation.As a masterpiece of American prose,Walden has a profound influence.Being the first Chinese translator to render Walden,Xu Chi's translation is authoritative and representative.Walden is a prose genre.This thesis is a new attempt to study translation intersubjectivity in prose translation based on Xu Chi's version.Bakhtinian dialogism could provide a new perspective for the study of translation intersubjectivity.Moreover,a theoretical basis plus methodological guidance is contributed.The intersubjectivity contained in dialogism overcomes the thinking mode of subject and object.It advocates the understanding mode of subject-subject or subject-intermediary-subject,which brings us a new viewpoint on meaning and understanding.Its guiding role of translation practice and translation analysis is worth thinking about and digging into.On the basis of Bakhtinian dialogism,the present thesis takes Thoreau's Walden rendered by Xu Chi as an example to probe into the interplay and interaction effect between the source text author,the translator and the target readers,analyze the factors that may come into play in the dialogue of the subjects and delve into how Xu Chi reflects translation intersubjectivity through his choice and adaptation.The author argues that the study of the process of translation is the study of the self/other dynamics and translation is the product of a dialogic event,that is,an open-ended enterprise involving a creative understanding of the self and the other.
