A Report On The Translation Internship Of The United Nations Secretariat Remote Practicum Program

The author participated in the United Nations Secretariat Remote Practicum at the Chinese Translation Service,Department for General Assembly and Conference Management,from 15 February to 15 October 2019,during which the author translated documents from English into Chinese covering various subjects dealt with by the United Nations.This report contains an overall introduction of the program,analysis of the original translation and the revised version provided by UN senior revisers as well as suggestions for the program’s future development.This report aims at providing a reference for those who are interested in this program.This paper is divided into four parts.The first part is an introduction,which mainly introduces the background of this remote translation program and the framework of this report.The second part provides an introduction of the program,including introduction of the United Nations Chinese Translation,characteristics of the task document and the translation process.The third part is analysis of translation examples,which is also the core part of this report.The author will borrow Catford’s translation shift theory to analyze and compare the original translation and the reviewed manuscript from two aspects,i.e.level shifts and category shifts.The final part concludes the whole report and offers a few suggestions for the follow-up development of the program.
