A Report On E-C Translation Of Geocriticism:Real And Fictional Spaces(Chapter 2)

With the increase of international contacts and academic exchanges in many scientific areas,the translation of academic works,serving as a connecting bridge,has become essential and more frequent.However,difficulties are still remained in the practice of academic translation,especially in terms of language barriers,cultural differences and lack of specialized knowledge.The text of this translation practice was selected from the French scholar Bertrand Westphal's Geocriticism: Real and Fictional Spaces(English Version),which is widely acknowledged as a masterpiece in the study of geocriticism.Geocriticism is a highly specialized area,thus Westphal's book naturally contains multitude of allusions,quotations,technical terms and interdisciplinary background knowledge,not to mention the equally numerous long and difficult sentences.How to faithfully translate these terms and sentences and how to effectively convey the literary and academic characteristics of the source text have become the major concerns for this practice.Based upon the process of the translation practice,this report mainly analyses the translation task from three aspects,i.e.understanding,expressing and revision.Under the guidance of Jef Verschueren's Theory of Adaptation,the translator adopts strategies and methods such as amplification,free translation,splitting and the like to solve the problems encountered.In addition,suggestions and limitations are also summarized in the report as professional finding and reflection,hoping to make some contributions to translation in the geocriticism-related area and the growth of novice translators.
