Relevance Theory regards translation as a kind of ostensive-inferential activity, which is used to interpret the source language either intralingually or interlingually. In this ostensive-inferential activity, the translator understands the source language and selects proper code according to the relevance. On the basis of the principle of relevance, the translator finds the optimal relevance from the ostensive communicative behavior of the source communicator, and then transfers this relevance to the target readers,so that the target readers can get the adequate contextual effect through the effective processing efforts, and thus understand the intention of the source communicator. It can be concluded that Relevance Theory has a certain explanatory power to explain the complex phenomenon of translation. As one of Mo Yan's main representative works,Jiu Guo has a unique local cultural atmosphere. In cross-cultural communication, due to cultural difference, the spread of local culture is bound to cause a certain impact, resulting in the phenomenon of cultural default.Cultural default is also a difficulty in translation, which requires translators to adopt appropriate translation methods to solve. Therefore, based on Relevance Theory and Nida's cultural classification, this paper chooses Jiu Guo as the research material to explore how to achieve the optimal relevance with the source language when translating the phenomenon of cultural default and what translation methods are used by the translator from five aspects: ecological culture, material culture, linguistic culture, religious culture and social culture. The results show that: 1.When translating cultural default, the translator judges the acceptability, cognitive ability and cognitive environment of the target readers, and the translator makes full use of the known cultural knowledge and deduces the communicative intention of the original author according to the explicit context assumptions of the original author, and further conveys this communicative intention to the target readers. The target readers obtain adequate contextual effect through their cognitive environment and context assumptions provided by the translator, and thus deduce the original writer's communicative intention.By the translation of cultural default, the communicative intention of the original writer's is consistent with the expectation of the target readers,so the optimal relevance with the source language is achieved.2.Through the analysis of five kinds of the phenomenon of cultural default, the translator adopts the following translation methods:(1)In ecological cultural default, the translator mainly adopts literal translation, transliteration, literal translation with addition, and literal translation with transliteration.(2)In material cultural default, the translator adopts literal translation, transliteration, free translation, idiomatic translation, transliteration with addition, literal translation with annotation and literal translation with addition.(3)In social cultural default, literal translation, free translation, idiomatic translation, transliteration with addition, transliteration with annotation, and free translation with annotation are used.(4)In religious cultural default, free translation, literal translation, idiomatic translation and transliteration with addition are adopted.(5)In linguistic cultural default, the translator adopts literal translation, free translation, idiomatic translation, literal translation with annotation, literal translation with addition.By using these translation methods, the target readers can better understand the original author's communicative intention through the context hypothesis provided by the translator,so that the target readers can achieve the similar cognition and understanding with the original readers.
