A Multi-angle Study Of Modal Adverb "Zhipa"

This paper selects the emerging Chinese modal adverb "Zhipa(? ?)" as the research object.Under the guidance of the Three-dimension Theory,and based on a large number of factual language materials,the syntactic,semantic and pragmatic features of the modal adverb "Zhipa(??)" are analyzed at the synchronic level.With the help of grammaticalization theory,this paper traces the diachronic evolution of modal adverb "Zhipa(??)" and analyzes its grammaticalization motivation.In addition,from the perspective of English-Chinese translation,this paper investigates the polysemy and subjectivity of the modal adverb "Zhipa(??)".The full text is divided into seven chapters,the specific content is as follows:The first chapter is the introduction.First of all,the reasons and significance of this research are expounded.Then the paper introduces the conceptional studies and functional studies,synchronic studies and diachronic studies,mandarin studies and dialect studies,case studies and comparative studies,ontology studies and external Chinese education studies of modal adverbs.The research status of predicative modal adverbs is also reviewed.Finally,the research methods and corpus sources used in this paper are explained.The second chapter is the investigation of syntactic expression.The syntactic position of the modal adverb "Zhipa(??)" is mainly described.The cooccurrence of"Zhipa(??)" with auxiliary verbs,modal particles and other adverbs is also investigated.It also explains the tendency of the modal adverb "Zhipa(??)" to choose different types of sentences.The third chapter analyzes the semantic characteristics of the modal adverb "Zhipa(??)".First,we divide the meaning of modal adverb”Zhipa(??)" into subjective emotion semantic and cognitive modality semantic.Then,according to the strength of subjectivity,the subjective emotional semantics are divided into three types:worry,speculation and euphemism.Finally,according to the different basis of conjecture,the cognitive modality semantics are divided into two cases:fact conjecture and hypothesis conjecture.The fourth chapter investigates the pragmatic function of the modal adverb "Zhipa(??)".It is mainly summarized as the function of subjective commentary,the function of message and doubt transmission,the function of focus,the function of tone alleviation and the function of discourse connection.The fifth chapter traces the diachronic evolution of the modal adverb "Zhipa(??)" from diachronic level.The development process is divided into three stages:syntagmatic period,transitional period and mature period,and four kinds of grammaticalization motivations are summarized:syntactic environment,semantic evolution,contextual absorption and speaker orientation.The sixth chapter focuses on the translation of English and Chinese.We draw on Dyvik's(2002)theory of "semantic mirroring",and examine the polysemy of the modal adverb "Zhipa(??)" by comparing "Zhipa(??)" with its equivalent words.It is found that the modality semantics expressed by the modal adverb "Zhipa(??)"include three semantic levels of cognition modality:possibility,probability and necessity,and also involves individual moral modality.Based on the "dynamic equivalence"translation theory of Nida(1969),this paper analyzes the different ways of different translators to deal with the modal adverb "Zhipa(??)",and explores the changes in the subjective expression of sentences caused by the looming of the translation form in the translation.Chapter seven is the conclusion.The main conclusions and possible innovations of this research are summarized,and the future research is prospected.
