In the Qing dynasty,there is the atmosphere that the practical theory is developing vigorously,and under the academic background of the Mencius study attaching importance to the classics and seeking truth rather than emptiness,Wang Youpu,the writer who wrote ancient-style prose of Tongcheng School during the period of Kang-Qian,was influenced by Jin Shengtan's novel comment methods before,and then he was able to learn the ancient-style prose theory of Tongcheng School from Fang Bao.He accumulated half of his life,fully mobilized his excellent language skills and empathy,and finally wrote Mencius reading method in his later years.This paper is divided into five parts to study Wang's Mencius Reading Method.The first chapter studies wang's life and academic activities,including his experience of studying and preparing for the imperial examinations,his strong empathy and his communication with Fang Bao.Secondly,this chapter will introduce the edition and style of Mencius Reading Method,and analyze the forming background of it,such as Mencius study in the Qing dynasty,Tongcheng School's ancient-style prose theory,Jin Shengtan's novel criticism methods and eight-part essay writing.They all influenced Wang's writing practice.The second chapter explains the reading method of connecting the contents before and behind in Mencius Reading Method in detail.That is to say,Wang took the character as the guide to show the connection of Mencius's answer logic to the same person,the changes of both sides' feelings and positions during Mencius suggesting,and the different emphasis in Mencius's replies to different people.In addition,it shows that when focusing on the same argument,Wang always connecting the related content before and behind.The third chapter discusses the criticism method of filling something in Mencius,which means "Symptomatic Reading".This chapter mainly analyzes Wang how to use the approach of "symptomatic reading".He usually started from the detail words of Mencius,and made supplementary explanations for the parts of unclear and hidden implications.For example,by restoring the background of the dialogues,revealing the motives of the characters,and supplementing the emotional states of the characters,to explore the thesis of Mencius deeper and more.The fourth chapter pays attention to grammar,and focuses on the vision which attaches great importance to implication and grammar both in Mencius Reading Method.Through the analysis of the implication in Mencius,Wang grasped the main content and the main structure of each chapter.Through the analysis of the grammar in Mencius,the argumentative logic between chapters and sentences is clarified.Through the analysis of the syntax in Mencius,Wang could understand its significance to manifest the content and language momentum of Mencius.Finally,Wang selected the words in Mencius and analyzes the use of the words to be concise and elegant.The fifth chapter focuses on the unique value of Mencius Reading Method,as Wang's criticism works,and its influence on later generations.This chapter focuses on the characteristics of Mencius Reading Method returning to the text of Mencius and its application to the world.In the field of view and style of comment,we can be amazed at Wang's vision of focusing on content and grammar both,and he formed a set of reading techniques with traces to follow.His exploration of the literary value of Mencius and his outstanding style of criticism have highlighted his contribution to the prose criticism.Finally,the article analyzes the influence of Wang on the later criticism of Mencius,and makes the historical orientation of Mencius Reading Method in the Mencius study history and ancient-style prose criticism area clearly.
