In the context of globalization,a country's foreign language ability is related to its economic construction,scientific and technological development.It is related to the cooperation and level of communication between countries,and to the country's international status and development.Due to the national strategic significance of foreign language ability and teaching activities,the current international market demand for foreign language teaching and the cultivation of talents are constantly increasing,which is a challenge for all countries in the world.In order to cope with the challenges brought by globalization,the US federal government has formulated a series of policies to develop foreign language education.By setting up foreign language education programs in colleges and universities,a large number of new foreign language talents have been trained,which is of certain reference value to the foreign language teaching reform in Chinese colleges and universities.This paper hopes to gain inspiration from the research on foreign language teaching in American colleges and universities.This research adopts the literature method to analyze domestic and foreign literature on foreign language teaching in American colleges and universities.This research analyzes and sorts out the history,ideas,objectives,contents,methods and evaluation of foreign language teaching in American colleges and universities.In addition,the research uses interview method to interview teachers and students who have the experience of undergraduate foreign language teaching in the United States,collects the text data about the basic situation of undergraduate foreign language teaching in the United States,and makes qualitative analysis according to the text coding procedure based on grounded theory.With the help of NVivo.Plus,This paper constructs a theoretical model of undergraduate foreign language teaching mode in American colleges and universities,and then analyzes its basic elements and characteristics.Based on the results of the interview,this paper provides some suggestions for the theory and practice of foreign language teaching in Chinese colleges and universities.It is found that the foreign language teaching mode in American colleges and universities is an immersive teaching mode integrating four basic elements,such as classroom teaching,extracurricular project,international communication and network platform.The common characteristic of the four elements is to attach importance to the creation of the target language environment,so that students can immerse themselves in the sufficient language environment to acquire foreign language naturally.In the foreign language teaching mode of American colleges and universities,classroom teaching is the core element,which involves seven aspects:educational concept,teaching objective,teaching system,teaching content,teaching method,teaching environment and teaching evaluation.Extracurricular activities,international communication and network platform are the extension and expansion of the core elements.In the foreign language teaching mode of American colleges and universities,classroom teaching,extracurricular projects,international communication and network platform are interrelated and complementary.Based on the research,specific inspirations include:First,we should pay attention to the flexibility of foreign language teaching system and the globalization and nationalization of education policies.Second,we should adopt diversified foreign language teaching methods in colleges and universities,and pay attention to the cultivation of students' intercultural communication competence.Third,improve the richness and selectivity of the contents of the undergraduate foreign language courses,and reasonably develop the teaching of key languages.Fourth,we should develop the national cultural communication function of undergraduate foreign language teaching and pursue the practicality and application of foreign language teaching and learning.
