Duanmu Hongliang is a famous modern writer and novelist.During the period of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the War of Liberation,he had engaged in the progressive cultural work for a long time.In 1933,he began to create his novel Horqin Banner Grassland, which was finished in 1934.And this novel became the masterpiece which let the northeastern writers group make a big difference in 1930s.From 1936 to 1938,he employed himself in the anti-war literary activities, and his creation became mature and productive.A series of his unique stories, such as The Sorrows of Egret Lake and Red Night, established his position in Chinese literary field. However, previous research on these short stories are very little, and there are few research on the translation of The Sorrows of Egret Lake Selected Short Stories of Duanmu Hongliang. Therefore, the thesis will analyze Goldblatt's translation about its English version on the basis of Adaptation Theory.Adaptation Theory is established by the linguist Jef.Verschueren.It studies the language use from four dimensions:contextual correlates, structural objects, the dynamics of adaptability and salience of the adaptation processes.Adaptation Theory highlights that language use is a process of making choices and dynamic adaptations. That is,language use should achieve its adaptations to the cognitive, social and cultural elements.Translation is a cross-cultural activity in which translators make continuous choices to adapt to different context, linguistic structures and the need of target readers. In order to achieve successful communication, the target language must conform to the social norms of the target culture and adapt to target readers' cognitive psychology. So it is feasible to analyze the Goldbaltt's translation of The Sorrows of Egret Lake Selected Short Stories of Duanmu Hongliang from the perspective of Adaptation Theory. The Sorrows of Egret Lake Selected Short Stories of Duanmu Hongliang was created in the turbulent period of the War of Resistance.Duanmu Hongliang,as a refugee, unleashed his inner distress and homesickness sentiment by creating novels. At the same time,he attacked current social problems to express his patriotic passion by writing novels.Under the guidance of the Adaptation Theory, the author studies the English version of the selected short stories,in order to analyze how the translator Goldblatt continuously makes linguistic choices to adapt to the readers' requirements during the process of conveying the emotional elements which are expressed in the source text.
