On Differences Of C-E Translation Of Verbs In Individual Translation And Collaborative Translation Under The Influence Of Translators' Mother Tongue

In the process of introducing Chinese literature to the world,the academia has different views on who should take the translation task.Based on this,the thesis selects six Chinese literature works,and extracts 20,000 words from each of them as research data,from which Chinese verbs are selected and summarized on the basis of Shao's(2001)verb classification framework.Statistical analyses and case analyses are conducted in describing and comparing eleven translation methods of Chinese verbs.Then the Adaptation Theory are adopted in interpreting the influence of translators'mother tongues on their translations.Features reflected in literature works translated by L1 and/or L2 translators in individual translation and in collaborative translation are summarized in order to provide references for finding out an appropriate translator mode for Chinese literature works,and for introducing Chinese culture to the world in a better way.Through case analyses,it is concluded that Chinese-speaking translators in individual translation and a Chinese-speaking translator as the leader in collaborative translation pay attention to formal correspondence,and keep more Chinese verbs in the original;while English-speaking translators in individual translation and an English-speaking translator as the leader in collaborative translation prefer to omit Chinese verbs or imply the meanings of verbs.Besides,more Chinese verbs are translated into content words by Chinese-speaking translators in individual translation and a Chinese-speaking translator as the leader in collaborative translation;while the percentage of Chinese verbs translated into content words by English-speaking translators in individual translation and an English-speaking translator as the leader in collaborative translation is relatively lower than the former two.Through statistical analyses,it is found that there is a significant difference between the variable of mother tongue and the variable of eleven translation methods,which is statistically significant with the variable of seven types of Chinese verbs.The two findings mean that in using the eleven translation methods there are differences between translators with different mother tongues,and eleven translation methods of Chinese verbs are influenced by different characteristics of seven types of Chinese verbs.In a word,mother tongue do have a influence on C-E translation of verbs.Besides,in the variance test of content words and function words,the P value is not statistically significant,which means that there is no obvious difference in the number of Chinese verbs translated into content words or function words.From the perspective of Adaptation Theory,it is considered that both L1 and L2 translators voluntarily make adaptations in line with the English language and the culture of English-speaking countries on the macro,the middle and the micro level.With the influence of mother tongue,translators adapt to a different extent.On the macro level,L2 translators prefer to translate Chinese verbs into predicate verbs,without a clear boundary between the main constituent and subordinate constituents,which results in the lack of multidimensional structures in their construction of images.On the middle level,the process-orientation in language use is reflected more in English translations of L2 translators.On the micro level,L2 translators lack a discourse consciousness in selecting the subject of a text.In translating Chinese verbs,they lack a compression consciousness in translating verbs.On the basis of the above-mentioned quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis,the thesis summarizes features reflected from English translations of L1 and L2 translators from the perspective of three translator modes,providing a reference for finding out a better translator mode in the future.
