Generally, concepts that express location and change of space in languages tend to evolve into multi-functional grams with abstract grammatical meanings. There is a kind of word in Chinese that reflects the dynamic change of space—directional verb.We extracted the most typical feature of this kind of word—"direction",and used"directional category" to unify the direction verb and its evolved multiple functions."Qu(?)" is a typical member of the Chinese directional category. It also exhibits multiple functions in mandarin, ancient Chinese and dialects. This paper uses the analysis method of the semantic map model and uses the language facts of Mandarin, dialects, and ancient Chinese as basic materials to sort out and summarize the semantic and grammatical functions of the Chinese directional category "Qu(?)".On this basis, the horizontal and vertical linguistic factual relevance and grammaticalization path are used as references to clarify the correlation between its various functions, and then to construct a conceptual space and semantic map of Chinese "Qu(?)" to present the multi-function of this grammatical form Patterns and discover implicational universality. In the research,we insisted on the method of "the perspective of mandarinu vs.Dialects vs.Ancient Chinese" to observe each other, the cross reference of synchronic analysis and diachronic investigation, the combination of fact description and theoretical explanation. The full text is divided into six parts:Chapter 1 is an introduction, which clarifies the research purpose, significance, objects and methods of the article;introduces the development process and theoretical practice of the semantic map model.Meanwhile,we collate and comment on Chinese"Qu(?)" about the nature and function of the synchronic dimension and the diachronic semantic evolution and grammaticalization research status and achievements.Chapter 2 refers to authoritative dictionaries and related writings, and relies on the corpus of the Chinese Linguistics Research Center of Peking University and the modern Chinese corpus of Beijing Language and Culture University to analyze the multiple uses of "Qu(?)" in modern Chinese and sort out the various semantic types and functions about "Qu(?)" in modern Chinese mandarin under the category of verbs, directional verbs and auxiliary words.Chapter 3 explores the different meanings, functions and usages of "Qu(?)" in the history of Chinese language through the ancient Chinese corpus of the Chinese Linguistics Research Center of Peking University. And then combining the grammaticalization theory and the existing research results,we try to summarize the sources and related modes of various functions.Chapter 4 combines the dialect dictionary, relevant research literature and dialect corpus obtained from the survey, focuses on the grammatical functions of "Qu(?)" in dialects different from Mandarin, and integrates the functional distribution of "Qu(?)"in dialects and trace the sources of various functions, which provide cross-dialect examples for constructing conceptual spaces and expanding functional nodes.Chapter 5 first introduces the steps of drawing a semantic map model.Based on the previous study of the perspective of mandarinu vs.Dialects vs.Ancient Chinese, the functional nodes and interrelationships of "Qu(?)" in the Chinese directional category are analyzed, and the functional linkage chain of "Qu(?)" is sorted out,and then the conceptual space of the Chinese directional category "Qu(?)" is built up.According to the conceptual space,we cut out the semantic map. From the semantic map,we discovered the evolutionary facts of the etymology and multi-directional development path of the multifunctional model, and proposed the implication of commonality.Chapter 6 is the conclusion, which summarizes the main points and points out the possible innovations and deficiencies of this thesis.
