Under the guidance of basic theory in cognitive semantics, taking the typology combined by synchronic types, cognitive motivation and relative historical research as the idea, the author have investigated the directional category in the modern Chinese."The directional category" can also be called "translational motions". The expressions of motion in Chinese not only focus on the direction, but also concerned about moving tendency relative to subjective-objective ground when a person or an object is moving. Therefore, we extract the typical characteristic of motion expressed in Chinese-"direction", and use "directional category" to summarize and refer to it. This dissertation mainly chooses the typical directional words, directional complements and relative directional constructions of "qi (起)" group as the research object, from the four special topics to make a comparison research on the typical characteristics of the displacement expression in modern Chinese. The dissertation can be divided into nine chapters, except the introduction part and the conclusion part.In the introduction part, the author make a simple explanation to the relative concepts with Chinese directional category, and also clarify and list the relative types of the statements.Topic one:The multi-function and semantic map of "qi" in Chinese dialectThis topic can be divided into three chapters. Chapter one is based on the semantic differation and grammarization mode of mandarin "qi".Chapter two described and discussed all the kinds of grammatical function of "qi" existing in the difference between local dialects and mandarin, made cross-dialect syntactic and semantic analysis as well as hold the opinion that their etymology should be directional words or directional complement. Based on the former two chapters, chapter three integrated the predecessors’research results, using grammaticalization theory and semantic map mode to explore the synchronic multifunctional semantic association and the diachronic evolution path in mandarin and Chinese dialects. From the angle of typology, to observe several mutual relation of grammatical function of "qi" and to present the evolution chain of "qi". Finally according to the semantic map, the author put forward several implicational universals.Topic two:The monographic study of "qilai(起来)"This topic can be divided into two chapters, mainly discussed two relative questions about "qilai". Chapter four mainly investigate the dialects of Chongming (in Shanghai) and Haimen (in Jiangsu province), found that the word "chulai (出来)" almost covered all the senses of "chulai" and "qilai". Meanwhile, the meaning of "qilai" almost disappeared. This chapter also discussed the differences between "qila"and "chulai" on the aspect of the grammaticalization mode. On this basis, the paper discussed the capacity and complementary opposites in the semantic derivation of "V qilai" and "V chulai" from the angle of the dialect typology.Chapter five is an individual case in Ningbo and Zhoushan dialect, the structure of past-future aspectual expression is "V+dai+qilai(V+带+起来)". By analyzing its constructional meaning and cross-dialects study of its related forms, this chapter discussed the source, cause and the speaker’s construel of various situations. And past-future tense character which are salient in "V+dai+qilai"Topic three:The cross-dialect comparisons of "V qiqu (起去)" and the evolution of "qiqu" in different dialects. With a view of comparing the symmetry and asymmetrical distribution on the aspect of syntactic and semantic of "V qilai" and "V qiqu" in different dialects, this theme summarized and explained the meaning and usage of "V qiqu" from the dialect angle, and by observing its existence in the local dialects to clarify the grammaticalization trace of "qiqu". The author thought that the structure "V qiqu" is complex; its extending meaning is relative blankness. Moreover, it refers to the basic meaning and action of direction of "up and away (起而去)". The grammatical process of "qiqu" in the dialect is slow and still unfinished, and having the sign of being abandoned.Topic four:The grammatical study on the related directional constructions in dialectsThis theme is based on two basic conceptions:one is put the space concept as cognitive prototype, will be mapped to such cognitve domains as psychology, state and the like; The other is the existence of construction have motivation. Under these two basic conceptions, the author investigate the related directional construction and their grammatical degree, finding that most of them lie in the intermediate state of the grammatical continuum, having grammatical form stipulation, manifesting some degree of productivity and with certain pragmatic rhetorical effect.According to the pragmatic situation and development tendency, the author make a classification of two, one is the related construction with the grammatical form code and non-deductive meaning which has fossilized and the other is the construction that with low levels of grammaticalization and non-deductive meaning which has not fossilized. The main point is to analyze the causes of these two kinds of structure type and their development tendency as well as the possibility of grammaticalization. The last part is conclusion. In this chapter, the main ideas and contribution of this dissertation is treated. The insufficiencies in this dissertation and topics to be further discussed are also pointed out.
