A Practice Report On Interpretation For Sports Lectures In Light Of Gile's Comprehension Equation

In recent years,the communication between international sports fields has become more frequent under the influence of globalization.More international sports activities have been held for better cooperation and it is common that there are some communication problems for experts and athletes from different countries due to language differences.Interpreters have played a significant role in promoting the communication in sports field.Sports interpreting plays an important role in clearing language barriers in international sports competitions and sports communications,it has increasingly shown its significance in promoting international friendship and cross-cultural communication as well.At the same time,sports interpreters are required to be more proficient in sports interpreting since it has its own characteristics.From the perspective of Gile's Interpretation Comprehension Equation,some cases chosen from the author's interpretation for Dr.Nicholas Romanov's lecture "Pose Method Running" in the School of Physical Education,CCNU are analyzed in this thesis.Main obstacles during interpreting are illustrated,and suggestions are proposed as well.According to Gile's Comprehension Equation,the author has found that the main barriers during interpreting are linguistic barriers,extra-linguistic barriers and analytical barriers.Linguistic barriers are created by accent,yocabulary and syntax;extra-linguistic barriers are set by professional knowledge,situational information,contextual factors and cultural knowledge.Analytical barriers are mainly set by unfamiliar contents of the speech,unclear understanding of the speaker's intention,complicated and abstract concepts and unique language style.To overcome those obstacles,the author has proposed some suggestions,such as enlarging vocabulary,strengthening listening skills,improving the command of syntax to enhance linguistic knowledge;accumulating encyclopedic knowledge and cultural knowledge,improving the command of situational messages and context to expand extra-linguistic knowledge.And improve analytical skills by using cognition analysis,intention analysis,image analysis and style analysis.
