| In recent years,with the rapid development of China's economy and the establishment and effective progress of the goal and task of building a well-off society in an all-round way,the living standards and economic levels of our citizens have significantly improved.However,in today's social background where people's material wealth is basically rich,money and material have also been given new meanings by some people--a status symbol.Some studies have shown that money and material as the necessary existence to meet the needs of people's lives are not all harmful.Only this terminal materialism with the ultimate purpose of owning money and material will have a negative impact on individuals and society.Thus,it worth to be further discussed that how to reduce its level and harm ful influence.The concept of future time perspective(FTP)refers to an individual's subjective perception of the rest of his life.In previous research on materialistic intervention strategies,it was found that changes in future time perceptive could reduce the individual's level of greed.Therefore,this research is based on previous studies.From the perspective of motivation to view the impact of materialism dialectically,focusing on the harmful concept--terminal materialism,and examining the relationship between FTP and terminal materialism.Study 1 adopts a single-factor three-level design,using college students as subjects,using the imagination paradigm to manipulate subjects' FTP,and measuring the state of terminal materialism.The purpose is to explore the causal relationship of FTP and terminal materialism.The results show that,(1)comparison within the group:limited FTP can significantly reduce the individual's level of terminal materialism;open FTP and control group subjects have no significant change in the level of terminal materialism before and after measurement;(2)Comparison among groups:Compared with the open group,subjects who received limited FTP manipulation had a lower level of terminal materialism;There was no significant difference between the limited FTP and control group and the open FTP and terminal materialism of control group.Study 2 uses qualitative research methods to conduct in-depth interviews with 10 cancer patients who have improved in the anti-cancer association of city K.The purpose is to deeply explore the co-variation process and psychological mechanism and long-range relationship of FTP and terminal materialism based on the actual situation.The results show that,(1)the stages of the state of FTP and terminal materialism before having cancer,during cure,and after discharge from the participant are:blurry open FTP with high level of terminal materialism;limited FTP with significantly decreased or disappeared in terminal materialism level;then clear open FTP again with low level or disappeared terminal materialism stably,and instrumental materialism has emerged;(2)The characteristics of vertical change on participants' future time perception and terminal materialism are:blurry open FTP--limited FTP--clear open FTP;high terminal materialism--terminal materialism decline or disappear--terminal material maintain low level or disappear,the emergence of instrumental materialism;(3)The possible psychological mechanism of the co-variation between the two:the maintenance and reinforcement of the "false selves" by the process of value conditioning--the disappearance of the "false selves" and wakefullness of the "real selves" without value conditioning--the "real selves" established;(4)The co-variant relationship between the FTP and terminal materialism is persistent and long-lasting.This paper uses a combination of quantitative research and qualitative research to deeply explore the relationship between FTP and terminal materialism,found that limited FTP can effectively inhibit terminal materialism,which could provide some guidance for individuals to reflect on their original life goals and values and to formulate intervention strategies for terminal materialism. |
